It has become official, after clearing the waivers Jarrod
Saltalamacchia now has the ability to play. The Miami Marlins may be on the
search for a solid catcher for backup as their choices are defined to career
minor-leaguer Jhonatan Solano and the challenged Jeff Mathis. Is it the
occasion for the Miami Marlins to look into the trade market and pursue the
possibility of obtaining a backup catcher with quality.
One this is guaranteed though, J.T. Realmuto has developed
into the starting catcher. Realmuto has showed an enormous amount of skin in
all facets of the game ever since he has been called up, and has been
recognized as a clubhouse leader. The team enjoys his offensive boost and
pitchers love to throw to him. This being stated, it could be to Realmuto
benefit as a player to have a more tenured veteran.
Exactly what is out there? One probability is Welington
Castillo the Cubs catcher. The name Castillo has been thrown around in a vast
amount of conversations because the Cubs gained both David Ross and Miguel
Montero this offseason. An additional benefit is that Castillo is presently
beginning the final year of his contract and is only due to $2.4 million this
year. Castillo falls into a division with a vast amount of moderate offensive
and defensive production additional to average catchers. Castillo is cheap and
can be a probable force in the Marlins offense.
Another feasible option is Dioner Navarro the Blue Jays
catcher. Navarro has been searching for a beginner job since the Jays picked up
Russell MArtin in the offseason. There are teams that are linked to Navarro
such as the Detroit Tigers but nobody could complete the deal out of options
and stuck in Toronto. Although his probability for starting in Miami would be
low, he would be gaining more time than he is presently seeing with the Blue
Jays.
This winter the Rockies were seeking to obtain the catcher
Wilin Rosario. With the catching responsibilities being taken over by Nick
Hundley in Denver, Rosario is easily disposable. Although he does not carry the
leadership opportunities that some of the other applicants may have, he has a
tremendous upside and has the possibility of being another big bat in the Miami
lineup.
Although, the Miami Marlins are in no critical situation to
make the moves to obtain a new catcher, acquiring one would make a lot of
sense.
